New World ‘sneak peek’ trolley

Client

Foodstuffs North Island

My role

Digital Product Designer

Description

New World customers often wanted to quickly check what’s in their trolley without losing their place while browsing.

As part of a larger team, I worked on a feature called the “sneak peek” trolley — a simple way to glance at your items without opening the full trolley page.

Research & Insights
I conducted a series of interviews with shoppers to better understand their frustrations and pain points.

Here’s what stood out:

  • Most users checked their trolley several times per session.
  • Almost half of them found it annoying to leave their current page just to review their items.
  • People wanted a quick peek, not a full-page trolley takeover.

I also looked at how other online stores handled this, which gave me some good inspiration for the sneak peek approach.

The Solution: Sneak Peek Trolley
The feature we designed lets users quickly check their trolley with minimal effort. Here’s how it works:

  • On desktop, hovering over the trolley icon shows a small preview of items.
  • On mobile, tapping the trolley gives you a quick summary without taking you to a new page.
  • Users can change item quantities right from the preview.
  • It’s clean, simple, and easy to use.

Takeaway

The Sneak Peek Trolley made it easier for New World customers to keep track of their shopping without breaking their flow. It’s a small change, but it had a big impact on how smooth and enjoyable the shopping experience feels.
